Public art: beauty and the beasts
Public art heralded the first phase of the marina precinct, and new feature commissions are planned. A large bronze sculpture of a woman ocean muse swimming with Pacific porpoises graces the Victoria Pacifica Fountain along the shoreline walkway. When searching for a theme unique to the Vancouver Island region, Victoria International Marina management found that the Giant Octopus species native to the region from Campbell River south to Seattle is the largest in the world. The Guinness Book of Records reports one that measured 32 feet from tentacle tip to tip. Proposals have been sought for a bronze sculpture with a 30-foot span, emerging from the sea onto the dock. There are 11 images in this gallery
